06 October 2013: Ernie Pyle Memorial near Dana Indiana on Rt 36. Ernie Pyle was a famous war correspondent during World War II. He was born of tenant farmers and later attended the University of Indiana majoring in Journalism. He worked for a few newspapers in Indiana before joining Scripps Howard and becoming known around the world for his journalism work in the war. Ernie was killed April 18, 1945 near Shima Okinawa, the victim of Japanese machine gun fire.
